Gombe To Hire More Teachers Before December — Inuwa

The Gombe State Government has announced plans to recruit more teachers before the end of 2026 as part of efforts to address manpower shortages in public schools across the state.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya disclosed this yesterday at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Gombe.

The governor, represented by the Chairperson of the State Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC), Mrs Naomi Philip Maiguwa, said his administration was aware of the challenges confronting teachers, particularly shortages of teaching personnel.

“Before the end of this year, the Gombe State Government will recruit more teachers to bridge the existing gaps and further strengthen our education system,” he said.

Yahaya said his administration had continued to prioritise education since assuming office in 2019, disclosing that about 2,000 classrooms had been rehabilitated and more than 1,000 teachers recruited.

He added that the government had established mega colleges equipped with modern facilities, including teachers’ quarters, while introducing policies covering teachers’ recruitment, deployment, discipline, welfare and professional development.

According to him, the reforms and sustained investment in the sector had contributed to improved performances by Gombe students in WAEC, NECO and NABTEB examinations.

The governor assured teachers that their welfare remained a priority, urging them to remain committed to their responsibilities and uphold the standards of the profession.

He appealed for patience, saying the government could not address all challenges at once but would continue to tackle them “gradually and systematically.”

However, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Gombe State Wing, Ali Baba Dalhatu, called on the government to address outstanding welfare demands by teachers.

Dalhatu told our reporter that teachers were seeking payment of leave grants and full professional allowances, particularly for local government teachers who, he said, were currently receiving only half of the allowance.

He also appealed for the implementation of the policy extending teachers’ service years from 35 to 40 years and the retirement age from 60 to 65 years.

The NUT chairman said the union had presented its demands to the government and received assurances that they would be considered.

The Permanent Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Kabiru Mahdi, commended teachers and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the celebration.

Meanwhile, the Danbayo Foundation rewarded 10 outstanding teachers with ₦10,000 each for their dedication and performance, while the NUT also received an award as part of activities marking the celebration.
